The COVID States Project has issued a series of reports since the beginning of the pandemic regarding approval of how state governors and the President have handled the pandemic. We also have a dashboard that allows examination of the approval levels of each governor and of the President over time (the latter, both nationally and state-by-state).

The trends in approval for handling COVID for all 50 states plus the District of Columbia1. Average approval of governors’ handling of the pandemic has arrested its prior declining trend throughout 2021, remaining fairly stable throughout 2022 at about its current level of 39%. This is in contrast to 64% in April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, and 45% in the fall of 2021. That said, the overall picture of gubernatorial approval has not changed dramatically since our last report on executive approval in April 2022.
